衔接就是把语篇中句子间及其以上单位间的概念意义、人际意义等组成整体意义的一种手段、方式。尽管英语定冠词the只是个小品词,但其应用却极其广泛,在语篇中发挥着不可或缺的作用。为此,鉴于学术界对英语定冠词the已有的研究,论文着重论述英语定冠词the的语篇衔接功能:替代、照应、指示限定词、处理语篇信息。

Cohesion is a kind of means linking the ideational meaning and the interpersonal meaning among clauses in texts. In English, the definite article ＂the＂ is widely used and plays a vital important in texts. Thus, this paper, based on the previous studies about ＂the＂, discusses the textual cohesion of ＂the＂ and its function as substitution, anaphor, demonstratives, and processing textual information.
