On the Negative Influence of Over-standardized English-Chinese Translation of Terms

本文以全球化为背景，讨论了语言需标准化的语篇在当前社会生活中日趋重要的地位，指出标准化的语言似有溢出专业领域，影响到非标准化语言领域的倾向，成为文化中一个不可忽视的方面。作者从语言符号编码的角度，分析了标准化语言和非标准化语言之间的差异。作者随后提出了当前在翻译标准化语篇方面存在的种种问题，提出译者在标准化过程中要锁定的对象应该是一些专业术语和其它表达专业概念的语言单位。而不应将语言特点作为标准化的对象。

With Globalization as the background of discussion, this paper deals with materials involving terms requiring standardisation in translation. The author points out that there is enough evidence showing that language used in these materials has invaded into the realm of the general social discourse and may possibly affect the Chinese language as a whole. The author believes that thems negative influence to some extent stems from the translator's wrong perception of this particular type of translation, for in many cases, the translation is so over-standardized that it not only distorts the Chinese language, but also becomes extremely difficult to understand. It is suggested that only technical words or phrases be the target of standardisation and non-technical language units in these materials be handled more naturally.
