East or West——My Understanding and Concept of Sculpture

我们的地理环境及生活方式决定了中国古代哲学家重视天地人之间的关系,重视自身的生命体验,人与自然宇宙要和谐相处,顺应自然规律。在中国古代哲学的影响下,艺术领域逐渐形成了写意的传统,重神轻形,而非西方的严谨的比例和解剖,其深远影响一直延续到五四前夕。

Our geographical environment and lifestyle determine the relationship between nature world and human beings, in which people pay more attention to their own life experience and live in harmony with nature and the universe, following the laws of nature. Under the influence of Chinese ancient philoso- phy, the tradition of freehand creation has since gradually taken its root in the field of art, focusing more on spirit than on form of the works instead of emphasizing precise proportion and anatomy,as Western art- ists did, which continued to exert a far-reaching influence till the May Fourth Movement in 1919.
