On the Research of Hu'nan Dialects in the 20th Century

二十世纪的湖南方言研究大致可以划分为三个阶段:第一阶段从世纪初期到四十年代,是从传统到现代的转变时期;第二阶段从五十年代中期开始,大约十年时间,是以语音为重点的普查时期;第三阶段从八十年代初期到本世纪末期,是方言研究的全面发展时期。

The research of Hu'nan dialects in the 20th century may be separated into three periods: the first period is from the beginning of this century to the 1940s, which is the transforming period from the traditional way to the modern one; the second period, with a span of about ten years, starts from the mid-1950s, which is the time of general fieldworks on phonetics; the third period is from the beginning of the 1980s to the end of this century, which is the development period of dialectural research in all aspects.
