F-R. Leavis and Q.D Leavis, the couple professor of Cambridge University, are experts on Dickens with significant impacts in the 20th century. Their criticism of Dickens underwent a process from depreciation to praise: Dickens was promoted by them from a popular and "great entertainer" who was preoccupied with sentimentalism to one of the greatest creative artists who was popular, but yet profound, serious, and bracketed with Shakespeare. Their criticism of Dickens, either praise or depreciation, is based on the yardstick of moral judgments, that is, the seriousness of life. This ambivalent criticism is rooted in their outlook on culture, society and life. The value and significance of Leavis's heritage can be found only when it is put in the context of their era.
