Shakespeare's existence in the post-war English drama predominately takes the form of rewriting. In later 20th century Post-Modernist cultural contexts,Shakespearean rewriting demonstrates the paradoxical features of deconstruction and critical acceptance: while it is a deconstructive process in which Shakespeare's exalted canonical status is decentred, rewriting also reveals itself as a constructive form of dialogue between the living and the dead, and a special poetic existence of Shakespearean presence in contemporary culture.
