OUTLINE / Under the Fach system,mezzo-sopranos are subdivided into coloratura,lyric and dramatic categories, while altos are subdivided into dramatic and low categories.Coloratura mezzo-sopranos have a range from g to b2,while some extend their range to high c or high d.Cecilia Bartoli is a representative of the latter. While her middle and low range are both strong and vigorous,her voice is imbued with great dramatic potential.The castrato,now an extinct voice-type,used to play the heroic roles in baroque operas by Handel, Vivaldi and Monteverdi.Nowadays,coloratura mezzosopranos till their shoes,since they have a similar range.
