The title of Yan music, essentially exotic songs, needs redefinition. Lyrics were not originated from Yan and/or other exotic music, but had a direct relationship with clear and soft music in the south China during the Six Dynasties. In the transitional period from Sui to early Tang dynasties, Yan music, the popular music in emperors' court performed in large-scale music pattern was mainly based on exotic music. However, the tunes prevailing during prosperous Tang dynasty were the music type trimmed by music composition changes. This type of music, usually appearing at small banquets and home feasts, mainly consisted of clear and soft music, which adopted singing skills from lower Yangtze area and music from north-west of China and took vocal music as its natural property.
