Salvation and Nirvana——An Intersexual Study between T.S.Eliot's Four Quartets and Two Religious Classics

《四个四重奏》是T.S.艾略特创作后期的代表作,尝试通过信仰的重建为人类社会建立一个永恒的理想模式。《四个四重奏》从主题和结构等方面与不同时期的东西方宗教著作形成互文关系。本文借用狭义互文性理论的研究方法,解读《四个四重奏》与基督教《圣经》及与印度教《薄伽梵歌》之间的互文关系,以透析来自东西方不同时空的两种宗教观在《四个四重奏》中"难以置信的结合"以及这种结合的根源和意义。

Four Quartets is the representative work of T. S. Eliot in his last years, which endeavors to establish an ideal model for the human society through the reconstruction of the lost belief. Along with the ceaseless incoherent monologues, there are abundant code and cryptogram which can be conjoined into some ＂texts＂ closely related to some ＂pretexts＂ from east and west. Enlightened by the theory of Intertextualality from the narrow sense, this article, focusing on the analysis of intertextual relationships between the Four Quartets and Holy Bible as well as between the Dry Salvages and Bhagavad Gita, will shed light on the value of T. S. Eliot＇ s blueprint of religious salvation.
