严复是我国第一位提出全面向西方学习的启蒙思想家,也是一位中西哲学文化比较研究的开拓者。他对儒教和基督教的比较研究,将两大文化系统的异质性凸现出来。他对基督教和宗教问题的理解,具有中国传统文化的背景和精神特色。严复的宗教观念,代表了近代一部分中土学人,在坚持本土文化的精神特色的基础上,融合外来宗教与文化思想,推动中西文化会通的一种尝试与努力。

Yan Fu was a Chinese enlightening thinker who proposed to learn from the West in an all-round way in modern time. He was also a pioneer who made a comparative study of Chinese and Western philosophies and their cultures. His comparative study on Confucianism and Christianity showed the foreign characteristics of the two cultural systems. His thought of Christianity and religion had a background and spiritual features of Chinese traditional culture. So to speak, Yan Fu＇s religious thought represents several Chinese scholars who took a firm stand of the native culture to absorb the foreign religions and cultural thought, and help to bring about a happy union of Chinese and Western cultures.
