The Collection of Essays, Neither Jing Nor Hai School, edited by the late Professor Zhang Peiheng himself includes about forty essays published up to 2001 on the history of Chinese literature, exemplifying the practices of his literary criticism tbrough decades. Despite political oppression in his hard time, he irreversibly insisted on the ideals of Marx＇s ＂changing the world＂ and Lu Xun＇s ＂emancipating human nature＂; with the concepts of ＂individual,＂ ＂personality,＂ and the ＂Self,＂ he created a system of literary criticism characteristic of Chinese culture. As shown by this anthology inscribed with his motto ＂Never change the initial mind of seeking truth,＂ Professor Zhang new territories of research, and tested his own conclusions, the challenge of the global situation, till the last moment of so as always raised new questions, expanded to keep an open-minded stance amidst his lifetime
