Objective To investigate the effects of different times for drinking on oral comfort of patients undergoing lumbar surgery at the general anesthesia. Methods 100 fasting patients having undergone lumbar surgery at general anesthesia were divided into experiment group and control group in equal number according to if they desired to drink water when they were awakened from anesthesia. In the former group, the patients were administered with 5 mL water when they were awake and had no anal air bleed and 30 minutes later those having no abdominal distension with 10 mL water. In the control group, the patients were allowed for drinking. The degree of oral comfort at 8 and 24 hours as well as pH after surgery were observed and compared between the two groups. Results The differences in 24 h oral comfort and pH after surgery were statistically significant between the two groups (P 〈 0.01). Conclusion For the patients having undergone lumbar surgery at general anesthesia, drinking some water when they are awakened but have no anal air bleed may help to improve the oral environment and thus their oral comfort.
