Dewey, an American philosopher of pragmatism, regards language matters as the research subject. Starting from his philosophy of instrumentalism, he put forward the theory of language function and language meaning and objected to constructing abstract metaphysics, featuring in behaviourism and operationism. Dewey＇ s studies on philosophy of language enrich the content of world philosophy. He advocates settling the matters of traditional philosophy with the theory of mean- ing, which represents the introspection of pragmatism on the western traditional philosophy and has a profound influence on logical positivism, modern empiricism and daily language schools.
