The Particle Suo in Chinese Relative Constructions

本文以生成语法为理论框架探讨汉语关系结构中"所"字的性质,并在此基础上解释该成分在关系结构中的分布。作者认为,"所"是一个粘附复指成分。它本质上是被关系化DP的D中心词,在其补述成分移位后又中心词移位至最近成分统治它的限定性T中心词位置。至于该成分与复指代词在分布上的差异,则是因为二者是由不同层次的D中心词"所"重新分析而来的。

The present study investigates the nature and distribution of the particle stto in Modern Chinese relative constructions from the generative perspective. It is argued that suo is a resumptive clitic, which is the D head of the relativized DP, stranded when its complement undergoes movement to its PF position. Owing to its morpho-phonemic natu~ of being a clitic, suo cannot he phonetically realized in its stranded position. Rather, it has to head-move to the closest finite T position C-commanding it. The distributional differences between suo and the resumptive pronoun are accounted for by proposing that they are phonetic realizations of the head of different DP layers.
