James Feinimoer Cooper is a pioneer in the American national literature. He had shaped the image of Natty Bumppo loved deeply by the Amer- ican people in his masterpiece ＂the Leatherstoeking Tales＂. This image has showed the eharaeteristies of the Americans and these eharaeteristies has been to repmdueed many times in the American literatural images. This paper will analyze the signifieanee of the prototype about Natty Bumppo from the three American literarural typical images, the pioneers of the frontier,the hideaways of the civilization and the lonely maseuline images.
