华裔文学作家以文本的方式描写了各个时期华裔进行文化身份建构的努力。早期的华裔在美国社会,只能以落叶归根式的心态来进行文化身份建构,这一时期的文化身份建构是种族身份建构期;新一代华裔逐渐从边缘化到以熔炉的同化方式迅速建构自我文化身份,他们对移民国文化采取落地生根的态度,这样的文化身份建构是单维的,因此也就成为美国宰制文化的单面人,新华裔在实际生活中面对双重身份的困惑以及相应的身份建构矛盾。身份建构的矛盾性和模糊性引领华裔新一代对美国多元文化景观进行反思,在此基础上杂糅各种文化元素进行块茎式的随风飘散式的多元文化身份新建构。

Chinese-American writers described the efforts of Chinese-Americans to construct their cultural identity in different periods.The early Chinese-Americans couldn't realize their dream of becoming a member of American ingroup culture in that the dominant American society had a strong resistance to their efforts.America-born-Chinese took a cult of American culture and a resistant attitude towards Chinese culture and became one dimensional person in the dominant cultural environment.Yet they also met numerous ambiguities and controversies in the construction of cultural identity,which resulted in their reflection on the multicultural setting to set up a new identity in the way of rhizome and diaspora.
