The trope is not merely a rhetorical technique,but the presupposition of epistemology in understanding the linguistic intentionality.Focusing on the trope,this paper discovers that seen as the ontology of language,the trope is the theoretical starting-point of de Man＇s idea of language,emphasizing the intentionality;seen as the principle of reading,the trope results in the indeterminacy of meaning in text and its varieties;seen as the stance of epistemology,the trope is used to analyze how language both constructs and deconstructs the operation of ideology.
