AFTER the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the country began to recover from decades of invasion and civil war. Then Vice Chairwoman of the Central Government Soong Ching Ling was especially concerned about the health and growth of children and young people under the poor living conditions of the time. She set upon a new path to promote children’s welfare, championing the principle of "giving the most valuable things to children." One of her first moves was to set up a kindergarten in her mother’s house and launch the magazine, Children’s Epoch,
