Coming of an aristocratic family, Shao Xunmei was considered as a literary dude owing to the few sharp - tongued essays by Lu Xun concerning him. It is of particular import to investigate the impacts exerted on his literary and publishing career by his economic life and concept from the economic perspective. He has never hesitated in speaking of money, for he expresses what he truly thinks of money in some of his essays. He initiated the unique series of the gambling novel ; and, all his life, he invested time, energy and money in the publishing industry more than in any other undertakings, yet with no regrets at all even at the expense of ex- hausting all his possessions. After the founding of the People' s Republic of China, he turned to literary trans- lation in order to solve his livelihood problem, putting out quite a number of translated works. In a word, Shao Xunmei, outcropping through layers of dense fog of literary history, is a true scholar who lives by his own ideal.
