The author reviews linguistic universals from a formal perspective,semantic decomposition approach,and the idea of semantic primes or primitives.As a prominent case study,Decompositional Approach to HAVE is a widely studied topic in the theory of grammar.This paper introduces at length traditional grammar's and Generative Grammar's correlative studies to HAVE Paradigm,and probes into an alternative Decompositional Approach to HAVE: its birth,origin,evolution and amalgamation.At last,the author points out that it is difficult to establish empirically what the 'right' semantic primitives might be,or how many there are.
