Damned Hurt:On the Theme of Trauma in A Farewell to Arms

For a long time, Hemingway scholars held that ＂grace under pressure＂ was the chief features of Hemingway hero, which, however, neglected Hemingway＇ s intention of presenting the theme of trauma. Hemingway insisted that body and spirit should not be divided, and that the bodily hurt was the cause of the later psychological trauma. A Farewell to Arm.s, with its narrative of psychological trauma, represented people＇ s trauma of body and psychology caused by the war. Therefore, Hemingway presented his hero from the perspective of suffering instead of ＂grace under pressure＂.
