Masculinity Study on Protagonist Bigger in Native Son

《土生子》的诞生否定了黑人文学传统意义上逆来顺受的汤姆叔叔型黑人形象,树立了新黑人形象——主人公别格的形象。别格野蛮、残忍,用暴力的方式挑战传统以证明他的男性气质和力量,具有明显的霸权性男性气质。他对白人社会充满挑衅和憎恨,但又对白人充满了惧怕,在恐惧中杀了人。他抛弃黑人文化,被黑白两种文化拒之门外,成为一个边缘人,并导致了自身的毁灭,体现了其从属性男性气质和边缘性男性气质。本文从男性气质理论入手,深入研究主人公别格所表现出来的黑人男性气质,并探析了主人公黑人男性气质形成的原因。

The birth of Native Son denied the submissive Negro image of Uncle Tom in traditional black litera- ture. A new black image appeared--the protagonist Bigger. Bigger was brutal, cruel and used violence to challenge the tradition so as to show his masculine power. This kind of violence obviously reflected his hege- monic masculinity. He was provocative and hated the white society, but at the same time he was very afraid of it and committed crime in such a frightened situation. He deserted the black culture and was refused by both white and black culture in the end. Thus he became a marginal man and led to his own destruction. This reflected his subordinate masculinity and marginalized masculinity. This article aims at studying the masculinity of the black man Bigger and tries to analyze the causes of forming them, using the related masculinity theory.
