On the Difference Between Two Chinese Versions of The Bell Jar and the Gender Perspective

《钟形罩》是美国女作家西尔维娅.普拉斯唯一一部长篇小说。它体现出显著的性别特征和女性主义意识,先后被两位中国译者朱世达和杨靖分别翻译成中文。在翻译这一创造性叛逆过程中,译作是否会受译者性别意识的影响,抑或产生怎样的影响,针对这些问题,本文从翻译中的性别视角出发,通过对具体文本的细致分析,最终得出结论:译者的性别意识对翻译实践存在一定影响,在翻译女性主义文学的实践过程中,译者对待女性主义作品要具有女性意识,这样才能挖掘并释放出由于长期浸染在男性中心意识里而被忽略的女性声音,从而译出更好的作品。

The Bell Jar is the only novel written by Sylvia Plath, an American female writer. It retains distinct gender characteristics and feminist awareness and has been translated into Chinese by two Chinese translators, Zhu Shida and Yang Jing respectively. It＇ s well known that translation is a kind of creative rebellion. From the viewpoint of gender perspective in translation, this article focuses on whether the translators would be influ- enced by their genders during the creative rebellion and what kind of influence on the practice of translation would be triggered by translators＇ gender awareness. With the employment of comparison, the article, based on the thorough analysis of the practice of translation to some text, reaches the conclusion that translators＇ gender awareness does affect the degree. Therefore, when they approach the feminist works as translators they may as well develop the female awareness in order to let out the long ignored female voices which have been ig- nored and waned in the patriarchal society, so that they can translate better works.
