郭嵩焘外交思想的“理”、“情”、“势”三原则 ,是从实际出发的正确方针。所谓“理” ,即以礼待人、以理制胜 ,是处理对外关系的基本态度 ;所谓“情” ,即考察洋情、知时知己 ,是处理对外关系的出发点 ;所谓“势” ,即敌我形势、力量对比 ,是坚持以和为主、努力避战的策略方针。

GUo Song-tao's three principles to deal with foreign relations are realistic and correct: the first,to treat others with due respect and convince people by reasoning,is his basic position on foreign relations;the second,to investigate the detailed information and thus to know the enemy and know oneself,is the starting point of his diplomacy;the third ,to know the situation and the relative strength of the enemy forces and one's own,is a strategic policy which takes peace as the dominant factor and tries hard to avoid conflicts and war with the enemy.
