The air gap fringing eddy current losses of low\|profile high\|frequency inductors with multi\|layer flex circuit (MFC) winding are examined by FEA, The concept of a flux “keep\|away” region near the air gap is proposed for the fringing loss reduction in planar winding design. A fairly convenient method to determine the “keep\|away” region is also proposed. A tapered planar winding structure is designed for a 60 W power converter by the use of “keep\|away” region.
