在当今众多类型的游戏中,除了单纯的谜题类游戏,如俄罗斯方块,宝石迷阵等。几乎所有的游戏类型(这其中包含角色扮演类,射击类,策略类,体育类等)都会涉及游戏角色的设计。角色设计师因此担负起缔造电脑角色形象并赋予其生命的任务。这些游戏角色通过演出游戏中的故事成为了整部游戏的灵魂,游戏中角色的丰富程度也在很大程度上决定了游戏的娱乐性,游戏商也常常会把推出新角色作为游戏的卖点。可以说角色的创建成为了游戏元素中重量级的一项设计。
