Phillip Freneau was the famous poet and well known as an outstanding representative of the "Connecticut gifted poet" in the 18th century of America. As the prolific propagandist who celebrated the American revolution and hurled his vitriol at the British armies and poetry during the War of Independence, he was respected as "The poet of Revolution". In addition, he initiated a well beginning of American poetry by adapting traditional English poetry to eulogize the aborigine and beautiful nature of North America, which earned him a reputation as "Father of American poetry". This paper analyzes the artistic characteristics of Phillip Freneau's revolutionary poetry and lyrics with the conclusion that he played the transitional role between neo classicism and romanticism.
