The Relationship between Nirvana Images of Qiuci Grottoes and Sarvastitvada

龟兹人热衷于涅槃的造像,应该与此地流行的小乘说一切有部的思想有关,有部以止灭生命、消融于法性本体的"无余依涅槃"为最终理想,这必然塑造了龟兹僧人对于涅槃的看法,对其建造石窟也会产生影响。龟兹石窟的涅槃造像叙述了佛陀的最后灭度,这种灭度大致应该按照有部的涅槃思想来理解。

People in Qiuci had great interest in making the images of Sakyamuni＇s nirvan and it revealed the thoughts of sarvastitvada. The aim of the monks, learning sarvastitvada, was to stop lives and blend themselves to the world of Dhammata and this thought must have influenced the Qiuci monks＇ ideas about nirvana and promoted them to make caves which were full of nirvana images.The wall paintings had narrat- ed the Buddha＇ s death and we can understand the meanings of his death by the thoughts of sarvastitvada.
