In light of the tongzhuan materials between characters bearing labial and dental initials, the phonological development of ethnic minority languages and the comparison of Sino-Tibetan cognates, it may be deduced that the characters bearing the *sP- initial cluster mainly hold the xiesheng relationship with those bearing the fricative *s (traditionally the xinmu心 initail ) before the emergence of the affricates. Thereafter, the pre-initial *s- in the *sP- cluster was reduced and eventually lost. Under the influence of the following short vowels, these syllable fell into Division III with labial initials, assuming the features of Division IV chongniu syllables.
