"现代性"是与社会科学范畴的"现代化"对举的人文科学范畴,它不是指客观外界事物的性质,而是指人的心性气质以及外界对象在主体对象化意义上的性质。"现代性"不是单一的性质,而是流变性所构成的矛盾性。这一特性排除将现代性视为任何具体的单一价值的立场。"现代性"运用于艺术史等人文学科具有极为重大的意义。中国近现代艺术史研究运用"现代性"观念时,忽略了"现代性"首先应该作为一个中性描述性概念运用于对象。必须重视"现代性"与"现代化"的冲突,这尤其是艺术的特性所在。抗衡现代化—全球化的本土或传统取向,属于现代性的表现。晚清以来所有中西之争其实都以古今亦即现代性为生活世界前提。
