Register theory is one of the most important parts of Systemic and Functional Linguistics. Three contextu- al variables that determine the register are field, tenor and mode. Novels reflect the social reality by means of focu- sing on narrative characterization. Viewed from the three variables, the paper conducts a detailed analysis of the characterization in Arthur Hailey＇ s Blackmail to discuss the value of register theory in narrative characterization.
