Vocation and Public Participation: The Medical Association in Republican China

医疗职业的近代化是现代社会中的一种普遍现象。西医是中国近代之后的舶来品,自近代以降上海医师逐渐成长为一个自信的中产阶级专业人士群体。对接受了现代教育的医师而言,现代医学是共同的语言、是自我界定的形式。与之相伴,近代上海的医师群体也竭力与"国民大众"产生联系,通过上海医师公会这一职业团体,积极参与公共政治事务。尤其值得一提的是,在战后医师公会的重建过程中,国民政府试图用一个大政府去管理各种各样的公共事务,由此创制了一种国家控制社会的模式。

Since modern times,the physicians of Shanghai have gradually grown into a confident middle-class professional group. In the meantime,they participated into the public political affairs through their professional organization-Shanghai Medical Association. What's worth mentioning is that during the reconstruction of the medical association after the war,the KMT government attempted to deal with various public affairs through a big government,creating a mode of nation controlling over the society.
