In the present study, the phonological, morphological and semantic dimensions of Chinese characters were used in Stroop-like tasks to research the distinction between the vocal and manual Stroop tasks. The results revealed that the response conflict which occurred in response output led to the Stroop interference effect in the vocal Stroop task, whereas the interference effect in the manual Stroop task was attributed to the semantic conflict occurring in semantic encoding and the response conflict at the stage of response output, the semantic conflict being the primary factor. It is,therefore, concluded that the differences in the processing mechanisms of vocal and manual Stroop tasks originate from the fact that their Stroop interference effects occur at different encoding stages and are of different conflict types.
