Objective To study the association of rapid gait speed with cognition in Chinese male elder subjects. Methods A coross-sectional survey was carried out in the 160 retired cadres of Air Force PLA. 6-meter rapid walking and mini-mental status examination (MMSE) were tested for them. The demographics and chronic diseases were collected from their entire report of health examination and electric record of case history. Results In Logistic regression models, after controlling for sex, age, and education levels, chronic heart failure, pre-stroke which are associated with MMSE, rapid gait speed had a significant association ( P = 0. 009) with cognitive impairment ( MMSE ≤24) ,and the OR was 0. 751 (0. 625 ≤0. 902,P 〈 0.01 ). The area under receiver-operator characteristic (ROC) curve for rapid gait speed to discriminate the cognitive impairment was 0. 805 (0.739 ≤ 0.872, P 〈 0.01 ). Conclusion Rapid gait speed is significantly associated with cognition in Chinese male elders, and thus is a useful maker for discriminating the cognitive level.
