Everyday Use for Grandmama is a classic piece of Alice Walker' s short stories. The pro- tagonist Dee, a bold and strong-minded daughter, is regularly criticized as selfish and shallow in aca- demic circle. Conversely, her cowhearted sister Maggie is praised for her deep understanding of black cultural heritage. This article holds that there exist some misinterpretations on Dee, and that Dee may provide African-Americans with another angle of view on black cuhural heritage, and a strategy to fight against social oppression.
