The conventional idea that the Middle Ages in the West was a period of darkness completely cut off from the modern time should be reconsidered because it does not seem to fit into the historical facts. There is evidence that ideas of Christianity in culture, politics and economics have left important impact on later development in Europe through the channels of science, law and rational economic behavior. On the other hand, the present European culture also shows sparkles of modern values derived from religious concepts of the culture in the Middle Ages.
