《肉蒲团》把儒林作为写淫的背景,把科举作为写淫的伴奏,贯彻始终,使全书虽然主要是一部写淫的性小说,却同时有了儒林小说的特征,可称之为"儒林色情小说"。它把性与儒林题材堪称奇特地结合在一起,是一部刺向礼教的儒林之谤文、科举之詈书。

Sex and Zen is a fiction mainly marked by lustfully sexual desire,with the scholars' circle as its background,accompanied by imperial examinations throughout.Although it is a sex fiction generally,the fiction is meanwhile endowed with the characteristic of scholars' novel.Thus the fiction can be called 'a pornographic novel of scholars'.The fiction combines exotically the sex and scholars' circle,so it is a fiction criticism on the scholars' circle and scold of imperial examinations.
