Du Fu is not only a great poet in ancient China, but also a great calligrapher apt at various cal- ligraphic styles. His understanding of the calligraphic art and aesthetics in his earlier years differs from that in his later years : during the former period he prefers the cursive hand that indicates boldness and unconstrained- ness, represented by Zhang Xu ( 675 - 750 ), whereas during the latter period such calligraphers as Li Si (280B. C. -208B. C. ), Cai Yi(133 - 192) and Li Chao( ? - ?) become his favorites for their seal-character and official - script styles characterized by slim but vigorous strokes. This evolution in his preferences is resuited from the vicissitudes of his life and the change of his mind.
