中国西部电影,主要是指20世纪80年代后期,以西北、西南的自然环境为主要拍摄背景,深度发掘中国西部文化的精神内涵与民族性格,且具有一定历史和文化价值的影片。中国西部电影可以看做是一种黄土文化,以表现中华民族西部地区的人文民俗为主,同时注重人物的塑造与表现,具有一定的神秘色彩。中国西部电影有其独特的意象美和纪实美,在反映社会文化方面具有一种反思精神。在中国电影产业崛起的今天,西部电影创作要坚守优秀传统、融汇新的创作方式,在兼顾市场性与艺术性(电影双重属性)的基础上,探索多样化的题材样式。

China＇ s western movies mainly refer to those that were produced in the natural landscape of China＇ s north- western and southwestern parts after late 1980s to make a deep exploration of the spiritual connotation and nation charac- ter of Chinese western culture, and thus containing both historical and cultural values. Chinese western movies can be viewed as a type of yellow soil culture, presenting folk culture of the region and focusing on the image of characters, and having a mysterious color. Uniquely beautiful in image and reality -presentation, Chinese western movies reflect a criti- cal spirit in the depiction of social cultural aspects. In an age when Chinese movie industry is enjoying a rapid develop- ment, the western movie production should integrate both traditional and new methods, and explore diverse subject mat- ters with an eye on the market and art （the dual features of movies）.
