In documenting a debate between the Buddhists and the Daoists,the early Tang text'Issuing an Imperial Edict for Buddhist Master Xuanzang to Render Laozi(Dao De Jing) into Sanskrit'also identifies Xuanzang's principal ideas on translation.These ideas informed his undertaking of the translational task with which the emperor had charged him.They also shed light on the historic contributions Xuanzang made to the theorization of Buddhist scripture translation.
