The Significance of Morrison's Travels of the Chaotung in the Study of Local History

作为一个在中国近代史上影响巨大的人物,莫理循一生保留了大量的书刊和文献资料,但真正属于他个人的出版物,却只有1894年考察中国西南时的一部游记。作者兼具旅行家的激情和新闻记者深邃的眼光,所到之处,除了记下旅途中的见闻与访谈,还加上自己独到的思考与评论。其中涉及昭通的文字,篇幅虽然不长,但却特别在意普通人的日常生活,成为我们了解那个时代昭通社会的珍贵资料。

As an influential figure in modern Chinese history, Morrison conserved a lot of books and documents in his life, but there only one travels of southwestern China in 1894 which really belonged to his own publication. The writer had both of the journalists＇ profound vision and the traveler＇s passion. Wherever he went, he wrote down the knowledges and interviews in the journey, and in addition to his own unique thinking and comments. Among the travels, the text about chaotung was not long on the length, but they especially concerned about the daily life of ordinary people. So it was the valuable information that helped us to understand the chaotung＇s social condition during that time.
