Objective To find out how well the endocrinology doctors and T2DM patients recognize the correlation between T2DM and periodontitis. Methods Personal interviews and questionnaires were used for the survey of both T2DM patients and endocrinology doctors on their cognition on correlation between T2DM and periodontitis. The interview records and data served the results analysis. Results The correct rate of oral health knowledge was 1.5%-40. 2% in T2DM patients. The knowledge level that 'periodontitis may influence blood glucose' and 'controlling periodontitis is an effective way to prevent T2DM' is higher in patients concerning periodontitis as compared with patients unconcerning periodontitis (P〈0. 05). The 89. 3% of the patients would pay more attention to their oral hygiene problems when informed the correlation between these two diseases. In endocrinology doctors, the rate of pay-attention to their patients' periodontitis was 13%, and the asking rate about this illness only accounted for 3.8%. Conclusions Most T2DM patients and endocrinology doctors lack the knowledge of the correlation between these two diseases. For both patients and doctors, it is necessary to enhance the knowledge of danger in coexistence of these two diseases, thereby to improve the treatment strategy and the life quality of the patients.
