The Cultural World in Historical Narratives——The Reading Notes of Yukichi Fukuzawa’s Outline of Civilization Theory

福泽喻吉是日本近代著名的启蒙思想家和教育家，他的代表作《文明论概略》以世界文明发展的进程为坐标，分析了欧洲文明发达的根本原因，号召东方民族以西方为师，向文明时代过渡。福泽喻吉敏锐地预感到了同为东方文明的中日文化的差异，认为近代中国文明发展混淆了物质、制度和观念三个不同的层次，未能真正汲取西方文明的核心价值，从而限制了近现代中国的发展与复兴。

Yukiehi Fukuzawa is a well-known modem Japanese enlightenment thinker and educator, whose masterpiece Outline of Civih＇zation Theory coordinates the development of world civilization. The works analyzes the root cause of developed European civilization and calls the East Asian peoples to transfer to the West civilization. Yukichi Fukuzawa sharply realized the cultural differences between China and Japan, and that three different levels civilization which are material, system and concept are confused in Chinese civilization. Therefore, the core values of Western civilization are not really learned by Chinese, consequently, restricting the development and rejuvenization of modem China.
