The correlations between the erythrocyte insulin receptor (EIR), 7 plasma lipids and 7 electrolytes including 4 trace elements were analyzed respectively with stepwise regression method using IBM-PC/XT computer. It was found that 1) The number of binding sites of the high affinity EIR (Q1) is positively correlated with plasma HDL, and Mg levels and negatively with that of Sr; 2) The affinity constant of high affinity EIR (K1) is negatively correlated with plasma Ca level and tends to decrease when plasma Cu increases; 3) The number of binding sites of the low affinity EIR (Q2) is negatively correlated with plasma Sr and positively with plasma Al; 4) The affinity constant of the low affinity EIR (K2) is positively correlated with plasma total cholesterol and negatively with plasma Al levels. In conclusion, high plasma Sr tends to reduce the Q1 and Q2 and high plasma Cu tends to decrease K1; although high plasma Al may increase Q2, it might be a compensatory response to the decreased K, at the level of receptor binding sites. These results suggest that all these trace elements Sr, Cu and Al might have an inhibitory effect on the binding of EIR in non-obese NIDDM.
