Joyce Carol Oates, a renowned American contemporary novelist, draws a picture of sufferings, which derive exactly from the power operation. This thesis aims at analyzing the control of power over the individuals from three aspects, the obedience and resistance of the individuals and the overwhelming passion and vigor shown in the resisting process from the perspective of Foucault' s micro-power theory. In doing so, the author of this thesis is determined to uncover the existence predicament of modem people in A- merican society nowadays and to explore Oates' s hope for the future and her optimistic views on literary creation.
