The Chinese-English Translation of Signs:Problems and Methods

标识语翻译是国际旅游目地建设不容忽视的内容之一。以海口火山群世界地质公园为例,该景区中标识语英译存在许多语用问题。运用相关翻译理论,采用套译、直译、意译等翻译方法对该景区中一些标识语原译文进行了改译,以期对国际旅游目的地英文标识语规范化和国际化建设有一定借鉴作用。

The translation of public signs is one of the important components of building Hainan province into an international tourist destination. This paper analyzes the mistranslations and pragmatic mistakes by studying the examples taken from Haikou Volcanic Cluster Geo - park. By doing the case studies and by using the Skopos Theory and the translation techniques such as borrowing, naturalization, literal translation, free translation, the paper explores how Chinese public signs of environmental protection can be translated into standard English, in the hope that this research will contribute to the Chinese - English translation studies in this field and to the standardization of English public siens in Hainan.
