宇文所安译释中国古代文论,从文本本身出发,采用直译的笔法,比较客观地再现了原文的风貌,而辅以解说与注释则弥补了翻译所缺失的文本中的那份准确与深刻,同时,宇文所安把文本与文本产生的历史以及文本诠释的历史互相征引,相互比照,以合理的历史想像力去诠释文本,梳理并论述了中国传统文学理论与文学批评在广阔的文化史背景下的历史性变迁。

Stephen uses the method of literal translation in Owen Readings in Chinese Literary Thought, which generates a more objective representation of the original style, makes up the accuracy and profundity of the missing translation of the text supplemented by explanations and notes, and lastly quotes, proves and compares one another among the text, the history of the forming of the text and the history of the text interpretation in order to interpret the text with a reasonable imagination of history and comb and discuss the historical changes of traditional Chinese literary theory and literary criticism in the broad context of cultural history.
