This paper attempts to study Northrop Frye's myth criticism through The Tempest. From the perspective of Romance, Frye takes The Tempest as a fable of transformation from lower nature to higher nature. However, with the development of the post-colo- nial theory, the new commentaries on The Tempest have highly challenged the mythical reading. By invoking the idea of "the interrupted myth", this paper will expound the conflicts between these two different interpretative ways and afford an explanation on the efficiency and limits of myth interpretation.
