Catalyst:Another Role of Material

材料——作为一种终端元素并直接影响着建筑的建造——是建筑师将他的建筑构思付诸实现的关键手段,也是建筑师一直以来所致力研究的对象。本文将通过介绍笔者在哥伦比亚大学就学期间、于Steven Holl所领导的教学组内进行的设计,探讨将材料延伸至设计初期的构思阶段的可能-使材料作为建筑构思形成的催化剂。利用材料在空间、光影和形式等方面给建筑师带来的启示,使建筑设计朝着出乎意料、最终突破常规的方向前进。

As one of the end elements which has direct effect on the architectural design, materials not only a key way lor the architects to make their architectural concepts into reality, but also the topic that they have been committed to. This article makes an introduction on the design by the author under the guidance of Steven Holl in Columbia University （GSAPP）, explores the possibility that material extends to the initial stage of the design so that it acts as a catalyst for the design concept. Material brings the architects the inspirations in space, light, and style so as to achieve the unexpected and break through architectural design.
