MUSING ON WANG SHU’S AWARDS

王澍荣获2012年度昔利擅克建筑奖对中国建筑界来讲是一件非常重大的事件．作为祀王澍近8年的同窗好友，对他表示t嘲!也为中国建筑界感到骄傲！普利兹克建筑奖评委会主席帕恰博勋爵螺说王澍获奖的原因：“讨论过去和现在之间的适当关系是当今重要的问题．因为中国当今的城市化进程正在引发—场关于建筑应当基于传统还是只应面向未来的讨论。

Professor and doctoral student advisor at Southeast University School of Architecture and Chief Architect at UDG, Qian Qiang takes the 2012 Pritzker Prize as an opportunity to reflect on the state of contemporary Chinese architecture and its rising importance in world architectural circles. Qian Qiang attributes Wang Shu’s success to three factors: a strong background in literature, interest in folk culture, and research in both Chinese and Western architectural theory. In Wang Shu’s humanistic background, Qian Qiang sees three implications for the development of Chinese architectural practice. First, Wang Shu has worked and succeeded outside the state apparatus, and Qian Qiang thus calls for greater governmental support for independent architects. Second, Qian Qiang notes that the opaque and closed nature of Chinese architectural competitions means that Wang Shu’s success will not necessarily have any effect on how architecture-as-usual continues to be practiced in China. Third, although Wang Shu studied at a mainstream university, nevertheless he has presented himself as an alternative architect. Qian Qiang calls for academic reflection on what this means for the development of Chinese architectural pedagogy. Qian Qiang concludes by affirming Wang Shu’s decision to keep an eye on tradition while looking to the future as the direction that Chinese architecture needs to develop if it is to thrive.
